Records trace the production of Mount Gay Rum back to 1703 and the birth of rum as we know it. The place of birth was Barbados, the only island in the Caribbean that is built entirely on a base of coral. Therein lies its precious difference. Though the first surviving written evidence that rum was being produced in Barbados is a legal deed dated 20th February 1703, the contents of that document is evidence in itself that rum was being produced prior to that date. Most experts believe that it is from as early as 1663 when rum was produced in Barbados, making Mount Gay, the world's oldest rum.
For over 300 years, Mount Gay has been produced on the same plantation in Barbados and in 1925, Mount Gay Distilleries, as it is known today, came into existence. In 1975 Mount Gay was elected 'Best Rum in the World' by the Distilled Spirit Council of the United States. Since then Mount Gay has won numerous awards from around the world for its brands.
